Chapter II: Goal – Activities¶
Art. 4 – Goal and purposes¶
4.1 The goal of the Association is to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable society by (1) developing and sustaining free and open-source software that extends the lifespan of consumer electronics, whilst cultivating a resilient, transparent ecosystem rooted in community ownership, (2) empowering users with full control over their devices, and (3) advancing the broader adoption of this approach as a model for ethical, user-centred technology.
More specifically, the Association seeks to:
Extend Device Lifespan
Build an open-source operating system with shared components capable of running across diverse hardware.
Enable devices to remain functional until they physically fail, rather than being rendered obsolete by software limitations.
Reduce electronic waste by maximizing the utility of existing hardware.
Democratise Software Maintenance
Create code architecture that doesn’t require large development teams for ongoing maintenance.
Eliminate dependency on original manufacturers for software updates.
Enable community-driven development and updates for devices long after commercial support ends.
Organize gatherings of Nura Project community members and actively support the participation of all members in these events.
Enable community members to participate in related external events to advocate for these approaches and raise awareness of the project.
Restore User Autonomy
Ensure devices operate in the interest of their users, not corporate interests.
Remove built-in surveillance and targeted advertising infrastructure from the operating system.
Provide verifiable transparency through open-source code that users can audit.
Provide economic support to the community to advance specific priorities or to build strategic partnerships.
Promote Sustainable Technology Practices
Advocate for a model where hardware longevity is prioritized over planned obsolescence.
Educate users about the environmental impact of premature device replacement.
Demonstrate that ethical software practices and sustainability are achievable together.
Support other free and open-source projects that are beneficial to the Nura Project
Encourage the general development of a robust free ecosystem around the Nura Project
Governance and Community Stewardship
Protect the Nura Project by zealously maintaining it as a community-owned entity that functions transparently and remains accessible to all.
4.2 The Association can perform all deeds and activities relating directly or indirectly to its goal. It can lend its support or be involved in any activities similar to its own that are run by third parties. It may also provide support and take an interest in any other activities carried out by persons or organisations pursuing a similar goal or purposes.
4.3 The Association may receive any material or financial assistance or contribution from legal entities, public or private, or from individuals. The funds and materials thus collected shall be used exclusively for the achievement of its goal.
4.4 The Association may not distribute or procure directly or indirectly any economic advantages to its founders, members, Board Directors or to any other person besides the non-profit goal determined by the statutes.
