Hosted Mainline Communities

Mainline communities are communities of hackers and users usually organized around specific families of devices, with the goal to improve support on mainline linux. The postmarketOS project owes a big part of its success to the work of those communities, which have different levels of affiliations with the project.

To support those communities, postmarketOS offers hosting for them in GitLab and also the possibility to make use of our shared CI. The hosted space can be used to host kernels and other soc/device specific repos, like alsa-ucm-conf. We are still pending reply from OSUOSL regarding hosting firmware.

Rules

The hosted mainline communities need to respect the following rules:

  • Work to be nice and kind to each other. The postmarketOS CoC and AI policy apply.

  • Maintainers need to be aware that other members from other hosted mainline communities will have access to push to all repos from all hosted communities.

  • The main maintainers for each SoC should be identified in the group description. Each maintainer can set their own specific rules: who should be allowed to push, how development is done, etc.

  • In case of not logging into gitlab for longer than 3 months, anybody from the mainline community or other interested community members may take maintainership over.

Getting access to an existing community

If an community you are interested in is already hosted by postmarketOS, you should simply be able to contact the main maintainer for it, and ask them to collaborate with them and give you access. They are allowed and able to give you access to the community, and they are free to execute their best judgement to approve or reject the application.

Getting access to all the communities

Maintainers from hosted communities get access to all the mainline communities. This is to empower people and reduce friction in case of maintainers being busy or leaving. In order to request access, simply open an issue and fill-in the template.

Beware that having access to all communities means a responsibility. Always respect the preferences and rules from the main maintainers whenever contributing to a community.

Hosting a new community

If you are a postmarketOS Team member or maintainer of a current hosted community, you can create a hosted community at will. Please make sure to follow the rules above. If you do not yet have access, first request access to all the communities, and then create yours.
